New Moon in Scorpio

It's new moon today (9.15pm, UK time) in the sign of Scorpio, with the Sun and Moon aligned at 12 degrees in precise opposition to Uranus in Taurus, planet of radical change, innovation, freedom from restriction, and the idealisation of technological progress. This opposition also activates the ongoing square aspect between Uranus and Saturn (5 degree orb) marking a t-square with Saturn at the activation point. The chart carries a feeling of sudden awakeneings, intensified rebellion, protest, and unrest. This next lunar phase may be characterised by energetic breakthroughs, healing crises, actions and behaviours that may shock us awake on the one hand, or else provoke trauma and create disociation in the psyche, on the other. There is perhaps a warning here in this new moon to disengage from activities that are too polarising, to focus on our mental health and psychological well-being, and to engage in activities that support and nurture that.

𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗹'𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸

This new moon is an important initiatory moment in the astrological year. The essential seeds of life are being sown back under the ground, carried within the rotting leaves, decaying fruit and composting vegetation of the Autumnal season. Here they will be protected by the powers of the underworld. In Roman mythology, Pluto and Persephone (Proserpina) were known as the protectors of the seeds and the guarantors of the harvest, as they preserved the regenerative power of life through the winter months. So too in our lives, at this time, must we dig deep into the soul's memory banks, accept what is lost, connect with the grief that is present in that loss, and be prepared to journey into the darkness to know the mystery of our own being, and to sow a seed of renewal there.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗹

It is also a time to remember the soul contracts that we made when we incarnated, the situations and relationships that we chose to go through on behalf of our soul's healing journey. Scorpio delivers to us the deep consequences of our agreements, promises and hoped-for peace offerings. However misaligned certain of these might now seem, it is important that we forgive ourselves for those occasions on which we have gone astray in our judgment - accept that we were simply unable to see the whole picture at the time. Life goes on, and even though it may difficult to see what is ahead at the moment, both personally and collectively, it is important for us to remember that this is a time of transformation. By allowing the depth of this process to work on you, this 'composting of the soul', you may come back stronger, more deeply resourced in your being.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄

An oppositional alignment like we have today, can reveal the shadow aspect of Uranian energy, which at a societal level, can be an over-zealous iconoclasm (the stripping out of traditional ideas, symbols and images) and the advance of technocratic forms of governance, in which decision making is effectively taken out of the hands of elected representatives, and transferred to an elite group of technical 'experts', inevitably backed by powerful vested interests. The Promethean zest for large scale techonological intervention enables this transfer of power and is presented as part of an evolution of consciousness that will change the world.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆

Uranus is a very strong oppositional force over this new moon, as it is indeed during this whole period of time while Jupiter and Saturn are in Aquarius. And while it confronts Saturn through the square aspect this year, we really see Uranus the iconoclast at play, bringing sudden and sweeping changes to society, attempting to throw out the old order and replace it with a new ideal of the future, the 'Great Reset' for humanity. We are confronted with crises on various levels and in various contexts that seem ever more to be converging into a single vision. Whether it be the ideal of zero covid, zero carbon emissions, or the elimination of racial or sexual differences / prejudices, the drive to change society is radical, and presented as being overwhelmingly urgent. And however well-intentioned these goals may be, the new ways of living that are now demanded of ordinary people, and the new ways of communicating and interacting, tend to be trauma inducing and liable to create mental distress.

𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱

Uranus is in Taurus, the earth sign most connected to the body and five-sense perception; since the start of the pandemic, we have all had to go through extraordinary changes in relation to our own embodiment. As we have become increasingly dependent upon online engagements, and an ever closer alignment between the human being and the machine in the name of consciousness evolution, we may be facing the consequent eroding of soul. Whilst contemplating this, I was reminded today of the poem, Healing, by D.H. Lawrence, which feels particular apt right now:

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴

I am not a mechanism, an assembly of various sections.

And it is not because the mechanism is working wrongly, that I am ill.

I am ill because of wounds to the soul

To the deep emotional self,

and the wounds to the soul take a long, long time, only time can help

and patience, and a certain difficult repentance

long difficult repentance, realisation of life’s mistake, and the freeing oneself

from the endless repetition of the mistake

which mankind at large has chosen to sanctify.

(D.H. Lawrence)

New moon blessings to all
