Lunar Eclipse / Taurus Full Moon: A Crisis of Abundance

This full moon in Taurus (8th Nov, 11.02am (UK time) is a total lunar eclipse and there is a highly charged configuration in the eclipse chart. It looks like a portal of accelerated change and impactful consequences, strongly focussed around the unsettling Saturn-Uranus square, such a prominent theme of 2021, which seems to have held out for its swansong at this eclipse.

The moon is opposite Sun-Mercury-Venus in Scorpio, exactly conjunct Uranus in Taurus and square to Saturn in Aquarius - . It follows on from the solar eclipse on 25th October, and completes this eclipse season. Eclipse themes tend to reverberate for longer than an ordinary full moon- for six months, typically, until the next eclipse season.

The Taurus full moon will always ramp up the tensions between our material life and our psychological life, between the visible and the invisible, between what we have, and what we stand to lose. Occurring during the Scorpio season, as darkness comes around us like a cloak and the shadows of Autumn gather, the underworld lays claim upon our soul and we undergo a crisis of abundance; we try to preserve what is most valuable, in the midst of deep transformational process. With Mercury and Venus conjunct the Sun in Scorpio, we a re reminded that this is the time of Persephone’s return to the nether realm.

The presence of Saturn-Uranus at the heart of this eclipse adds a whole other dimension to these themes. At a global level this may prove to be a symbol of dramatic economic upheaval. Alongisde this, we will likely see fundamental changes to the social fabric of everyday life, with huge gains for some, and losses for many, and in ways that are not immediately apparent.

We might think of the Uranus-Moon signature as a kind of ‘out-of-body’ experience which breaks us free of attachment and which can facilitate sudden insight and a high degree of abstract awareness. This can feel incredibly liberating, but it also accentuates the trauma of disconnection, as it dislocates the mind from its somatic presence. The t-square to Saturn marks the impact and consequence of this apparent ‘liberation’. It is hard to judge what is good for us when we are catalysed by a radical activism, or inspired by disembodied insight, however compelling it may be; the freedom we experience is not real, in some very important ways. How on earth do we integrate such a lot of radical change back into our everyday experience? We need time and space to ground that back into the core of our being. What makes me feel secure in my body? What is wholesome and nourishing to my soul? These are good Moon in Taurus questions.

The Taurus-Scorpio trauma can be prompted by a sudden a loss of income, or wealth, or anything that threatens to take away what we have, activating our fear of poverty. Equally, it can be stimulated by the radical promise of ‘more’. Imagine a sudden and exciting opportunity is presented, one that could potentially revolutionise your fortunes, expose you to new people and possibilities; but which would, inevitably, disrupt your everyday routine and embodied rhythms. Such opportunities or incentives could present themselves to us under this eclipse energy and while they can take myriad different forms, their underlying theme would be to bypass the normal checks and balances of organic growth and bodily integration. They might seem like an ‘upgrade’, a radical overhaul that can short-circuit normal processing times; they might come, seemingly, ‘out-of-the blue’, appear to be breakthrough insights or synchroncities, but they are likely also shortcuts, simplifications, and pretend conveniences. Again, how do we respond? What could be the consequences? Saturn’s heavy hand is involved, reminding us that if something looks too good to be true, then it probably is; an anticipated material gain, might bring about a spiritual loss, or vice-versa.

We are experiencing a liminal moment in history right now, and this Saturn-Uranus square has overseen a period of major discombobulation. The fundamental narrative of what it is to be human is being called into question; indeed the very idea of what constitutes reality is being radically challenged. We are living through a period of hyper-materialism allied to dogmatic scientism, yet there also seem to be powerful spiritual frequencies streaming into our consciousness at the same time. In the face of this, old hierachies appear to be falling apart, as new forms of hegemony emerge; there are unprecedented opportunities for ‘ordinary people’ to come to the fore and make a massive social impact, inspired by new visions for humanity, and/or the promise of great wealth. What do we mean by humanity, though? In an increasingly technologically driven world, as human being and machine become ever more closely intertwined, might we be better off asking ourselves what it is that actually makes us human, what distinguishes that quality of humanness? Should the future of humanity be our primary concern, or the struggle for a human future?

On a mundane level, could this eclipse in Taurus signal an immanent shift in our relationship to money? Will we lose the right to use physical cash to pay for things, for example, as we are tempted ever more toward the apparent convenience of an exclusively digital currency? And will this, in turn lead to a social credit scoring based economy, where our access to money depends upon on our conformity to a particular narrative? These ever-present dangers are ripe for exploitation under an eclipse picture like this. It certainly fits the symbolism, alongside increasingly disembodied forms of social engagement and increasing levels of centralised control that insists: ‘this in your best interests’ or ‘ we are doing this for your own good’; that type of Saturn in Aquarius ideology. This eclipse should certainly serve as a warning, with the hard aspects to Saturn reflecting the consequences of a ‘progressive’ ideology being implemented with iconoclastic vigour, and at lightning speed.

And, in the midst of such accelerated change, there is, I beleive, an abundance of spiritual help coming our way, which is helping to awaken people to profound truths and create light networks that will hopefully facilitate the transition to a new earth; the lightning seeds of the Aquarian Age, being sown amidst the confusion.

At a personal level, we are likely to want to guard our independence over this eclipse, and break free of relationships and situations that seek to control us. Again, there is a caution here, as we can act impulsively under the Moon-Uranus energy, and break out prematurely or without attending to the deeper attachment issue which may be playing out. This is a warning to stay alert to the underlying patterns at play, and give primary attention to our embodied sense of connection.

My Taurus mantra runs: "I am fully embodied here, in the sensuality of this present moment."

Short Courses in Different Aspects of Astrology

I am offering a series of 3-week short astrology courses, in the Autumn 2022 /Winter 2023. I have four courses that you can currently enrol on, with the first one starting in mid-November. The courses cover a range of different topics, requested by diploma students. However, they are available to everyone for a fee of £80 (plus £4 booking fee if paid through credit/debit card or paypal).

The first course is on the Almuten (the 'strong one'), the traditional way of assessing planetary strength and ascertaining the strongest planet. This was a crucial component in the assessment of health and vitality, and was used by Paracelsus, Culpeper, William Lilly and the astrologers of that era. All kinds of astrological factors are included in this calculation that are no longer considered in modern astrology. Even for modern psychological astrologers, it is a fascinating exploration that offers a lot of insight into the way astrology was practised back in the day. You will need at least a basic understanding of chart interpretation in order to follow the class effectively. It starts on 14th November and runs as three live Monday evening classes until 28th Nov.

The full series of courses are:

All classes run 6pm - 8pm (UK time) on Zoom. Each session will be recorded and made available to all those who enrol.
